While I don’t want to deter you from choosing the professions that you want, I will say that if you want to make a bucket load of gold with your professions choosing Enchanting or Jewelcrafting is highly recommended. While both are expensive to level it is more than worth it in the end.   

  Basics of enchanting profiteering

Disenchanting   

Disenchanting is an awesome way to make alot of gold and falls under 3 catgories:   

• Disenchanting own gear
• Purchasing items to disenchant
• Crafting items to disenchant

Disenchanting own gear   

This includes all unused gear that you pick up from quests, farming, running dungeons and raids.  Disenchanted materials can then be sold on the auction house.

Purchasing items to disenchant   

This is a simple method that involves purchasing items off the auction house for a value which is less then their disenchanting value (you will need auctioneer and enchantrix mods for this). Then all you do is disenchant those items and relist enchanting materials for profit. The best part is these materials canbe listed for free on the auction house.

Items that I normally look for include armor and weapons from level 73 for the highest profit margins.   

Crafting items to disenchant   

This method works in conjunction with any crafting profession and involves creating cheap crafted items then disenchanting those items for a profit. Most crafting professions have an item or two that you can craft and disenchant for a profit. This is where enchanting works great with jewelcrafting. For example a jewelcrafter can make inexpensive stone guard bands, disenchant them and make anywhere between 5-15 gold depending on the server economy. Jewelcrafters have a lot of items that can be crafted very cheaply in order to make a proft from disenchanting.   

Enchanting as a service   

To take full advantage of this profession as a service you will want to have as many of the enchanting formulas as possible. This will keep players coming back to you to get their gear enchants and more importantly keep you making gold. The best part is most of the rare enchants can now be purchased  for dream shards in Dalaran or acquired via reputations.   

Every time you are in a major city, link your enchanting service on the trade channel while you go about doing your daily routine. You will usually be able to pick up some extra gold by pretty much doing nothing.   

  Basics of jewelcrafting profiteering   

Crafting to disenchant   

Simplistic, effective and repetitive. Crafting items to disenchant links back to what was mentioned above for the enchanting profession. You find materials on the auction house for an item that is uncommon or rare within jewelcrafting, craft that item, have it disenchanted and have the value of the disenchanted materials be greater than the costs for inputs. With regards to jewelcrafting there are a few items where this model works really well. For example the stone guard band  mentioned above and the shadow might ring have great disenchanting levels for the price it costs to craft them, especially if the market for buying eternal earth and eternal shaodw in bulk is low on your server. Other lower level items such as the sun rock ring, crystal citrine neck and crystal chalcedony amulet are very inexpensive especially if you are also prospecting because you will have heaps of uncommon gems to use. Determing which of these items to craft will obviously be based on the material costs on your server.   

Prospecting

Prospecting is an awesome way to make gold. You buy saronite and cobalt ore and break it up into gems using prospecting. You then scan the auction house and look for the best items to cut. The profit margins are usually between 150%-300%. One thing to note and watch out for is to make sure your server can support the constant influx of gems you provide. If it can, just keep buying ore and breaking it up. I know servers are starting to get flooded and now I can’t sell the gems as fast as I buy the ore so I only buy ore once a week or so.

Buy uncut gems to cut   

Look on the auction house for cheap uncut gems. For example I normally check out cardinal rubies and if the price is right compared to cuts such as Bright, Delicate, Fractured or Runed cardinal rubies, I’ll purchase a few and normally make between 20-40 gold per cut once sold on the auction house.   

Jewel crafting as a service   

Similarly to enchanting, if you have a large number of jewelcrafting recipes than you can offer your services in a capital city to generate easy revenue.   

Trade skill proft maximization addon   

I recently came across an awesome addon called ProfMax which utilizes auction house scan data to determine price profit margins on your trade skill items, bringing them up in your tradeskill window.   

ProfMax calculates buy prices for materials and sell prices for crafted items to make calculations for potential profits.   

The best thing about it is it quickly determines which is the most profitable item for you to make, instead of you wasting time scanning the auction house.  Make sure you check it out!

I thought I would do a quick post to show other players what addons I use to improve my raiding/pvp efficiency and how I basically make my WoW gaming experience easier.

There are a number of addons out there (I get most of mine from Curse Gaming) that I just can’t play without. Below I’ve provided a list of the addons I use while playing my Rogue or Shaman.

Essential addons:

AG Unit Frames - I hate the standard Blizzard unit frames as they are very limited in what you can do with them. AG Unit Frames allow you to manipulate your unit frames however you wish with features such as positioning, resizing and colour coding specific classes and types. Its awesome and I love it because its so simple to configure. Check out the image below to see how they look and were I position my unit frames.

*Note - Last time I updated AG Unit Frames off Curse it had a lot of bugs in it. You can get a bug free version here.

OmniCC - Awesome addon! So simple, yet so effective. It adds text to items/spells/abilities that are on cooldown to indicate when they will be ready to use. I can’t raid or pvp without this one. Essential for those players that wish to master their rotation.

Doom Cooldown pulse - Very similar to what OmniCC does, but instead of adding text to items/spells/abilities that are on cooldown it ‘pulses’ the image of the item/spell/ability in the middle of the screen when it comes off cooldown. Very handy to have to ensure you don’t miss any cooldowns in the heat of battle.

Quartz - Another very helpful addon I use. Quartz enhances display of standard casting bars by allowing you to modify cast bar sizes, postioning, text size, colors etc.

Classtimer - Very simple and essential addon for any situation. It allows you to setup timer bars for your abilities on the screen. You can setup player, target and focus timers.

DeadlyBossMods - If you want to raid and do well, get this addon.

Omen  Threat Meter –  Great addon that allows you to manage your threat level. It has saved my life on many occasions as a Rogue.

Gladius - Awesome for arena. Adds enemy unit frames to arenas for easier targeting and focusing.

Rogue specific addons:

NugComboBar - Can’t play my Rogue without this one. Shows combo points for Rogues. Very light weight and highly configurable.

Combo Points Redux - Essential addon for Rogue pvp (if you’re mutilate). Tracks deadly poison stacks on a target. Similar in appearance to the NugComboBar addon.

Shaman specific addons:

Healbot - Makes healing so easy. I wouldn’t want to heal without this addon.

Decursive - Awesome addon that notifies my Shaman when someone needs to be cleansed/purged and allows me to do so with a click of a button.

Power Auras Classic - Such a useful addon. It provides visual cues when you gain/lose buffs, debuffs etc. I use it to provide me with visual cues when my Shaman’s water or earth shield goes down or when my weapon buff wears off.  Check out images below  for an example of my Power Auras. Totem Timers - Helps to manage totems, shields, weapon buffs. I primarily use it for monitoring totem cooldowns and range.

Non essential addons

Recount -  Serves as an analysis tool by tracking things such as damage and healing done. Not essential but I find it useful in tracking my dps and healing, and seeing how everyone else is doing within the raid.

General addons:

Gatherer - Tracks items you gather and records their locations on your map.

Auctioneer - Scans and tracks auction house data.

Postal - Enhanced mailbox support.

Bagnon – Merges your bags into one.

Gearscore – Lets you know how geared a player is.

Enchantrix – Helps enchanters see what items will disenchant into.

Durability Status – Icon that shows you the durability of your gear.

Poisoner3 – Allows you to apply poisons to your weapons using a small quick menu.

Today I’m going to discuss the PVE Raiding Combat Build (20/51/0) I use, why most Combat rogues are using it and the rotation that I utilize to consistently top or be near the top of the damage meters.

Smashing 10man Toravon

BUILD

Combat has always been regarded as the mainstay rogue PVE talent tree
and continues to remain a strong option in WotLK. I choose a Combat PVE build over one of the viable Mutilate builds, mainly due to the playstyle of Combat builds. I like the builds flexibility in having both multi-target dps potential through abilities like Killing Spree (KS), Blade Flurry (BF) and Fan of Knives (FoK) and also great single target dps.

With the poison buffs Blizzard has implemented in patch 3.3 we have seen a move from the popular 15/51/5 Combat build to the more poison focused 20/51/0 Combat build. The buff to Deadly Poison in patch 3.3 ensures that Deadly Poison will now proc Instant Poison once it has reached 5 stacks on a target. This means that Combat rogues have returned to using Instant Poison instead of Wound Poison on their Main Hand weapon, and continue to place Deadly Poison on a fast Off Hand weapon to ensure fast stacking of Deadly Poison and triggering Instant Poison thereafter. 

The added benefit from poisons has shown to increase dps when putting points in [Vile Poisons] and [Improved Poisons] instead of the popular and reliable [Relentless Strikes]. Rogues that choose to stay with [Relentless Strikes] can continue to use Wound Poison as they will not have the appropriate Instant Poison buffs available in the Assassination Tree to take full advantage of the patch 3.3 changes. However with the lack of poison dependency 15/51/5 rogues will be unable to complete equally with 20/51/0 rogues on single target encounters. 

ROTATION 

Once you get the hang of your Combat build and the special abilities that come with it you will realize that there is really no set rotation that you must strictly follow. To be honest it is quite simple to use, but takes time and experience to master. 

What I do in a raid environment: 

• First thing I do is Tricks of the Trade (TotT) on the tank. I have a focus macro setup for this.
• I will then usually start with a Garrotte and then get Slice and Dice (SnD) up straight away (it is very important that you do not let SnD fall off as it increases your dps significantly).
• If I start out, out-of-stealth I will do a Sinister Strike (SS) and similarly get SnD up.
• Now depending on what type of scenario you are in I do either of the following:
• Single Trash target
  • I will SS until 5 combo points (cp) are accumulated and then use Eviscerate (if SnD is still up). However on trash mobs you will usually not get to 5 cps.
• Multiple Trash targets
  • If there are more than 2 targets I will hit FoK and then KS if it is up. I will then spam FoK. Usually trash mobs in Heroics die very fast so there is no need to blow all your cds on a single group. I usually alternate KS and BF between groups and spam FoK. If you notice only one target alive switch to SS. Always make sure SnD is up. I time my AR so that I always have it up for the Bosses. (I find that AR is not very effective on trash mobs in Heroics anyway because they go down way to fast to make full use of the ability)
  •  For harder-to-kill trash mobs such as those in ICC I pretty much follow the same strategy. I hit FoK and then KS if it is up. I then hit AR and BF and continue spamming FoK (make sure that you are targeting your tank’s target). I blow all my cds as fast as possible because ICC mobs have a lot of HP and it takes a while for them to go down so stacking your abilities on these guys ensures your dps goes through the roof! It usually takes about 30-40 seconds to down an ICC trash group so you will at least have KS available for every group you face (if you have the KS glyph) and BF for every second group.
• Boss
  • For tank-n-spank boss fights such as Saurfang or Festergut I hit SS a couple of times after SnD is up after initial contact then hit KS and blow my other cooldowns thereafter. I then spam SS until 5 cps and Eviscerate if SnD is still up. I TotT the tank when it is up and use my abilities as soon as they come off cooldown.

Summary  

As you can see there is no strict rotation Combat rogues follow and it does vary depending on your situation. Most important thing to note is to always keep your SnD up as this provides a signifcant boost to your dps. Vary the number of combo points you SnD depending on when it is about to fall off. Use your special abilities (KS, BF, AR) as often as possible and during the right situations. Eviscerate at 5 cps. Never use KS with AR. Use FoK when fighting more than two targets and lastly don’t forget to TotT your tank whenever it is up.

Today we will explore the grand and new Season 8 Compositions, for 3v3 of course. The topic on compositions in arenas has always been a controversial one. Some players believe that best compositions are based on skill and others believe that they are solely based on what classes are over-powered during the particular arena season. What do you believe best compositions are based upon? What is your ideal composition? With that stated lets get to the core of this post.

According to Arena Junkies, as of April 13th, 2010, the top (active) arena team for 3v3 has the following composition; Burnjob {Paladin} [Protection (Main)/Retribution], Lichard {Priest} [Discipline (Main)/Holy], Gynx {Shaman} [Restoration (Main)/Elemental]. <Is This Real Life> is an arena team originated from the Server Earthen Ring on the Battlegroup of Vindication. In my opinion this has to be one of the best AND unusual compositions I have seen lately.

If you really think about this composition it might come across as a bit odd though, Tankadin + Double Healer composition. How does that work you might ask? Quite easily actually, Burnjob (7/57/7) has more survivability through the tanking talents + resilience than any other class would through just regular resilience. Aswell with Burnjob gearing in his Tier 10 PvE retribution gear along with some Retribution PvP and a PvP Tanking shield he becomes what players on Malfurion consider a Mack Truck.

Really, as a tankadin, the mitigation talents take care of a decent amount of what resi would (except this is flat damage reduction, which includes crits). It does this without nerfing your other stats. This is what makes tanks much more dangerous these days, because with 12% overall/18% spell reductions, as well as the crit avoidance you’ll get from being at -5.6% (the chance an enemy will crit you will be reduced by this amount), you’ve really got a good chance of outlasting your opponent, as well as being able to put out some hefty burst when needed.

 

Example:

That 10K arcane barrage crit is suddenly reduced by 1.8K, and that’s before any resistance kicks in. At 35% or less HP, that 10K crit is reduced by a further 3000. That 10k Arcane Barrage now hit you for 5200. That’s almost half. Of course, you’re not far off dead, but neither do they if it’s been a fair match (i.e. you both started at full). At that point, it’s best to finish off with Avenger’s Shield if it’s not on CD and you have the mana, or a HotR+ShoR combo. If that’s not enough to finish it, add in a judgement and hope for the best. If they’re at 50HP, add in Hand of Reckoning and lol at them as they just died to a taunt =P. If you’re really desperate to survive and have a few 1000 hp left, Divine Protection (pala shield wall if you prefer) and roll with what i said above.

If you notice in the first citied paragraph a tankadin can reduce the amount of damage they take by about 10-15% more so than any other classes. Also, with Burnjob using mostly retribution gear he can bring roughly 80% of the burst a retadin can bring.  With Burnjob being a protection paladin he will absorb most of the damage allowing the healers to take turns healing as the other can damage if health permits.

 Gynx <0/15/56> can bring the steady healing with chain heal and lesser heal as well as throw an earth shield on the opponents burst target of choice.  During down time he can use healing wave to top off any team member.  As well as being a great healer he brings the use of Totems for the extra Spell Power as well as a Mana-Tide totem (Which would benefit all three members). Restoration shaman do not only bring great heals, but they can supply crowd-control (Hex) to lower the amount of burst damage the group takes.  If all the teams health permits then Gynx can supply a great deal of burst damage with a Flame Shock + Lava Burst Combo followed by a Chain Lightning and a quick Lightning Bolt.

Lichard <60/11/0> brings anything and everything available.  As a Discipline Priest he decreases the amount of damage taken through the use of Power Word’s aswell as PvP. Lichard has the ability to use a minion to regenerate 5% of his mana each hit the shadowfiend deals. Also, if the opposing teams kills the shadowfiend through damage the priest gains 5% of his health through a glyph.  As well as having virtually an infinite amount of mana Lichard can deal an AoE fear effect to add to the enormously amount of crowd control  this team possesses.  While throwing out heals when needed, which is less often because of the talent abilities in the Discipline tree, Lichard has the ability to spam Mana Burn on any opposing player that, well, uses mana.

 As you can see this composition is more viable than most would think. You rarely see this composition and if you play a Paladin, Priest, or Shaman I would insist that you attempt it.  This composition has Cons as all do, but this one has a greater deal of Pros than Cons. One of the most major Cons would probably be the simple fact that this group does not have the same amount of burst as some comps do.  If this group can survive the burst of other teams then there is a 90% chance that they will win. Please keep in mind though, if you are decent at what you do you can make almost any composition work.

There has been a lot of debate on how to gem your rogue to maximize your dps for endgame content. Players have many views on this issue and from reading forums and other blogs the majority base their claims on personal experience and trial and error. I think the most important thing to note before gemming or regemming your gear is to consult a spreadsheet, such as this one which is freely available on Elitist Jerks. elitistjerks.com

These dps spreadsheets are put together by theory crafters that are very likely to know much more about rogue mechanics than you, as they spend a heap of time analyzing player data to create them. So even if you think that you are the most experienced rogue out there, the chances of you being correct and the spreadsheet being wrong about theoretical dps is very low. I definitely recommend grabbing the one from the link above before spending hundreds of gold on gems and enchants and see if it can help you maximize your dps. It is very easy to use and pretty much only requires you to type your character name, realm and zone. It then imports your character information from the armoury and spits out a bunch of results for you to work with.

Another good reason why you should always use a spreadsheet first is because it takes into account things like Crit cap and ArPen cap which are not very obvious to the average player. Also implementing major build changes such as going from a rupture cycle to eviscerate only cycle isn’t obvious if you don?t use a spreadsheet.

Please remember that a spreadsheet will NOT make you a better player or tell you how to play. It will help you hit your theoretical highest sustained dps, and you will only hit this theoretical dps if you know how to play your character. So if you are having problems with things such as keeping your S&D up then it probably won’t help you too much and you first need to learn your character better and your character’s rotation.

Spreadsheets aside the general understanding about stacking a stat is mainly to do with the gear that you are currently wearing and also your build to some degree.

Firstly and foremost get to the yellow hit cap if you aren’t already there. You are in bad shape if you are missing special attacks. Now with the poison changes in 3.3 some believe that AP surpasses agility gems. The reasoning is that AP gems will push the poison damage by more than the Crit we would gain with AGI gems. A lot of rogues are gemming 40 AP gems for this reason. Furthermore with the high end ICC gear it has been determined that we are actually capping on Crit and coupled with the fact that the Crit from agility doesn?t increase poisons Crit rate (only pure Crit rating does), straight AP seems to be best when it’s a choice between AP and agility currently.

Now ArPen has been thrown in the mix (just to make things even more confusing). Gemming ArPen is very dependant on your gear and a lot of ICC geared rogues are gemming ArPen. One thing to note is that ArPen is really only a viable option if you can get close to the cap. So if you have over 500 passive ArPen (ICC gear is stacked with ArPen) and a trinket that procs ArPen like Mjolnir Runestone it may be worth regemming.

Being an ICC geared rogue myself I am currently gemming 40 ap for red and blue sockets, and 20 ap 10 haste for yellow.

We all know that gold is a vital component of WoW and is needed for pretty much every aspect of the game. From leveling your character’s skillset and professions to buying mounts, gear and consumables. Every WoW player is always looking for more gold. Unfortunately farming for gold tends to be unbearingly boring and time consuming. Furthermore a lot of WoW players only have a limited time they can dedicate to playing and would like to spend that time doing the fun things in the game like raiding and pvping. For this reason a lot of players opt to buy gold online.

Now please don’t get me wrong here. I am not saying that players should go out and buy gold online as there are risks involved such as getting your account permanently banned if you are caught by Blizzard and also the chance of being scammed by dodgy gold sellers. All I am saying is that the option is out there for players who have limited time to play to remain competitive in the game through means such as gold buying. I myself have never bought gold before but I was interested to do some research on who the big players were in terms of gold sellers, who was most reliable and honest, and who was the best value for money.

Zuggy from ZugGaming.com asked me to review his Gold Mastery Guide, and kindly sent me a copy. Normally I don’t concern myself with guides but I thought that this was a good opportunity to have a look at one and actually see if they are worth the investment.

His Gold Mastery Guide contains gold making secrets that he has used throughout his years of WoW play. For those of you that are interested in checking out a free preview of his guide go to Zuggy’s site here. His preview guide contains 5 videos to get you started in increasing your gold balance. The videos include a look at utilizing the auction house and your professions, where to grind and what daily quests to do, and power farming including 30 minute farming routes.

I must say that just by checking out these free video guides has taught me how to think about the game in a new way. In other words it broadened my narrow view of how I can make a lot of gold fast. To be honest I really didn’t have that many ideas in the first place, and thought that farming and doing dailies was how most people made their gold. But I hate farming with a passion and only resort to doing it when I am really low on gold. Before checking out Zuggy’s Gold Mastery Guide I had no set strategy in making gold. My gold collecting would pretty much consist of mining saronite and titanium in Sholazar Basin once in a while and accumilating honor points in bgs and Wintergrasp to then buy epic gems and sell them on the auction house. I guess this is the reason why I never really had much gold on any of my characters. But most of the time I could get by, and instead of being bored out of my brain farming I could focus on the things that I enjoyed in the game, like PvP.

The one thing I can say that Zuggy’s guide has taught me is that farming makes up a small amount of what you need to do to make tons of gold. What Zuggy really focuses on is how you can make your gold through your professions and the auction house. His teaching method is very simple and comprehensive. He breaks down his strategies into easily understandable sections and provides real life examples of scenarios to reinforce his strategies. He doesn’t just provide you with a list of items to farm or a few farming techniques that you may have not been aware of, but explains how players can take his strategies and adapt them to their specific server’s economy.

I have to admit I was quite surprised to find out how simple it actually is to make large amounts of gold. The funny thing is that most people don’t realize that there is no gimmick or secret method to making gold. Its about developing a plan and focusing on speed and efficiency when implementing that plan. Zuggy stresses that the key to making gold is maximizing your time. We all want to do all the cool stuff when we play WoW, not spend time farming. So maximizing the time you dedicate to making gold is the key.

By stepping through Zuggy’s guide over the last few days, I was able to develop my first gold making strategy that centered around my character’s professions (enchanting and mining) and utilizing the auction house. I found the auctioneer information particularly useful as I was not familiar with all the features of the addon or how to best use it. I also changed my perception of enchanting from being one of the worst money making professions to one of the best. Zuggy’s tips and resources allowed me to map out my farming route (which is between 30-40mins and makes me about 180-250g) for part of my daily strategy. Pretty much everything from where to go, what route to take when I get there, and things I can multitask while I’m there. I then conclude my daily strategy with what I have learned in exploiting the potential that enchanting combined with auction house strategies allows you to do. My next step is to now analyze my current daily strategy and see how I can make it more efficient by improving my speed and hence total gold per hour. I also plan on creating strategies for my other characters centered around their professions.

For those of you out there that are interested in simplifing your gold making process while at the same time minimizing your time farming and grinding, I hope I have provided you with an unbiased view of what Zuggy’s guide can offer you. This guide is definitely not your standard 50 page e-book that offers you some tips and quick strategies, it is a comprehensive piece of work with over 1Gig of video tutorials and numerous pdf guides. In my opinion the personalized support and continous updates makes this a worthwhile investment. Zuggy offers one on one support to all his gold guide members via email. The upcoming 3.3.2 patch is set to be released next week (February 2^nd at this stage). Blizzard has posted the patch notes for this mini-patch on the official Korean WoW site. The most noticable changes include some small fixes to make dungeons run smoother, some class buffs for druids, shamans and warlocks and a much needed nerf for prot warriors. We will also see the introduction of Toravon the Ice Watcher in the Vault of Archavon and the start of Season 8 (Arena).
